05/16/08 - Jimmy Ibotson

Jimmy Ibotson is sometimes credited with giving country music a new direction. A true troubadour in the modern sense, when Ibbotson shows up for a solo show, he sets up a bass drum and foot cymbal. He sings and plays guitar, supplying credible rhythmic support with his feet.

05/16/08 - Living Room Series at the Meadowlark

An accurately named live music series, the Living Room Series puts Denver's best acoustic artists in the intimate venue of the Meadowlark for an up close, bare your soul performance. Tonight, Gregory Alan Isakov, Paleo, The Wheel, and Shenandoah share the floor.

5 Points Jazz celebrates the music, culture and history of Denver’s historic Five Points neighborhood, with performances highlighting many of Denver’s finest jazz musicians. Highlights of this year's festival include the Hot Tomatoes Swing band and Future Jazz Project.

Members of the Hot IQs, Everything Absent or Distorted, Mothership, D.Biddle, and Born in the Flood are putting their names in a hat. Those names are picked at random to form new bands. These new “super groups” will perform 3 songs, 2 covers and 1of a band one of the members is part of.

05/18/08 - Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School

One of the most interesting concepts in life drawing, Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School started in Brooklyn, spread to LA, Austin, Melbourne and Scotland and now Denver. Draw burlesque dancers, roller derby girls, fetish models, drag queens and lots of other fascinating subjects! Fabulous prizes are awarded for the winners of wacky drawing contests, and the class is open to artists of all skills.

05/18/08 - The Mars Volta

If for whatever reason you aren't already a Mars Volta fan, buy a ticket, go to the show and get yourself a seat on the bandwagon. They have a reputation for awesome shows so if your looking for great entertainment and great music, this is the concert is where you're guaranteed to find both.

Every Wednesday in May at the Starz
FilmCenter, the Denver Film Society,
in partnership with the Design Council
of the Denver Art Museum, presents the
four-part FILM AND DESIGN series.
Each evening will explore one of four
different aspects of the complex
intersection of design, architecture and
cinema while staying away from the
usual suspects.
Curated by Howie Movshovitz,
Education Director – Starz FilmCenter,
who will introduce each film and
moderate a conversation with the
audience and a small panel of experts.

All shows are at the Starz FilmCenter at the Tivoli, 9th and Auraria Parkway across
from the Pepsi Center. Parking is free in the Tivoli surface lot with proper validation.

Alfred Hitchcock may be considered the great “master of suspense,” but he began his career as a graphic designer, and one can see in his work a masterful understanding of visual design
and use of architectural forms and spaces.
Hitchcock also recognized the design talents of Saul Bass, whose credit sequences stand on their own as magnificent short films.

Louis I Kahn: An Offering
to Architecture
Peter Kirby (1992)

These two films are about the search for the “ideal” in
the art of architecture from very different perspectives.
Kochuu (trans. “in the jar”- the act of creating sublime
private worlds in small isolated spaces) is about
contemporary Japanese architecture, its roots in
Japanese tradition and its impact on Nordic architecture.
The film is beautifully photographed using traditional
as well as contemporary structures to describe the roots
of contemporary Japanese design in the traditional
way of building. The Japanese influence and relationship
to the Nordic tradition of contemporary design (Alvar
Aalto, Erik Gunnar Asplund, Sverre Fehn and Juhani
Pallasmaa) is a unique twist to this film.
An Offering to Architecture was produced in the early
1990s for the LA Museum of Contemporary Art’s
show “Louis I Kahn: In the realm of Architecture”.
Kahn, arguably the best American architect of the 20th
century, is seen here in archival footage complimented
with interviews of those who worked with him. His
unrelenting search for the ideal in his architecture
resulted in the creation of powerful buildings and ideas which are private worlds in their own way.

The style known only since the 1960s as “art deco,”
has become something of a cliché now, but in the
1920s and ‘30s “moderne” (or “international moderne”
among its many names) stood for all things chic,
sophisticated and hip – and not of earlier times.
Deco can be playful and sexual. Busby Berkeley
connected deco to militarism and parodies of
militarism, while “Hitler’s filmmaker” Leni Riefenstahl
and others turned it to fascism and worse.
