Okay, so I’ll admit it, I don’t really know what design is. My best friend is a designer, I work for designers, I even enjoy looking at design websites while I am procrastinating writing blogs for TWID, but I can’t tell you at this point in time what design is. Is design, like art, something you can’t describe but know when you see it? Is it something so ubiquitous that it’s impossible to find a human-made object or place that hasn’t been designed? Or is design just the stuff that we use every day, but cooler? This is a topic vast and broad but, fortunately, there is now a place to go discuss, research and bask in design with a capital D.

The Shoppe bills itself as providing cereal, cupcakes and design goods, stocking “over one hundred must have and hard to find titles on design, art, fashion and architecture as well as ‘zines, rare home accessories, clothing, jewelry and novelties.” Fabric Lab owner Tran Willis is the Shoppe’s cereal mistress and Emma Skala makes the cakes. With a degree in ceramics, Skala has translated her artistic training to her love of baking, only using the freshest quality ingredients and more fruits and spices than sugar overload to make her treats tasty. The cupcakes also come in three sizes, just right for any appetite. On my recent visit I had a coconut cupcake (yum) with a delicious cream filling and smothered in shredded coconut.

The crew is rounded out by Josh Willis, Tran’s husband and partner at the Fabric Lab, DJ DSRN the Shoppe’s resident DJ and Lifter Baron, master of design. With a roster of weekly events, which include hands-on crafting get-togethers, Project Runway watching and a monthly story hour for the wee ones, there is always an excuse for cupcakes before lunch and cereal at midnight. “Old School” Saturday morning cartoons, art flicks, monthly art shows and board games are also promised – add in free Wi-Fi and I don’t see why you’d go anywhere else.
